Microtopping Smoothstone Texture

Description - Microtopping is a technique of applying a polymer-modified cementitious coating in a relatively thin layer (approx. 1/8-inch). To create the “smooth stone” texture we use a combination of trowels, squeegees, and floor sanders. The result is best described as a mix of slate, tile/pebble, granite type of texture. It is smooth enough that it is really an interior application which is easily cleaned with a mop or automatic floor scrubber, yet it is distinct enough that it immediately catches the eye. Although applied as a seamless floor, we normally enhance it with a decorative scoring of straight lines, curves or arcs to create a limitless variety of patterns (much like what can be done with terrazzo). Abrupt color changes are possible either by coloring the product itself before applying, or by acid staining after the fact, giving much the same rich-mottled look of colored or acid-stained concrete. Actually,  we can get deeper colors than concrete because the product we use (MIRACOTE) has ground marble as an aggregate. This takes color more easily than the silica/quartz aggregates normally associated with concrete. (For more reasons why we chose this particular product, read through the section, “Microtopping – Knockdown Texture”.) Last of all, the floor is armored with multiple coats of a high-performance urethane sealer. This not only enhances and locks in the color, but also provides years and years of maintenance free service.

Suggested Uses - This type of microtopping floor finish is for the owner who requires something very attractive and different from the ordinary. It is something with the class and quality of terrazzo or stone tile, but with a “new-world” look - and has the flexibility of architectural, decorative concrete to create beautiful individualized patterns. It is used in retail and grocery stores and makes a great feature floor for lobbies, foyers, restaurants, etc.

Examples - Go to http://www.brickform.com for examples of decorative concrete. The textures don’t really apply here but you will get some idea of the colors.

Below are some examples of our work.
